Parent/Non-Relative Kin

If a child can’t safely stay at home with their birth parents, a relative or non-relative caregiver who can step in and provide care for the child is the next best option.

What is Fictive Kin?

Fictive kin (or non-relatives) are people who are close to the family but not blood relatives. They are also not related to the family through marriage. Examples of fictive kin are long-time neighbors, god-parents, close family friends, or mentors. In the event that the parents or relatives are temporarily unable to look after the child or children, Family Allies will suggest that a fictive kin is an ideal person to engage in providing safe and healthy care.
