Honor grandparents raising grandkids – “Your Views” Florida Today Newspaper – September 12, 2010

Today is Grandparents Day, set aside to honor and recognize the grandparents in our communities who guide, support and nurture their grandchildren.

It’s also a time to recognize those special grandparents who act as primary caregivers to their grandchildren. In Brevard, over 6,300 children are being raised by their grandparents.

For many, becoming parents again may not be how they envisioned their future after raising children of their own. But out of love and concern for their grandchildren, they have selflessly chosen to raise a second generation of their family.

If you are a caregiver raising relative or nonrelative children, you know there can be many challenges.

Fortunately, due to the dedication and commitment of Mary Ann Sterling, founder of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard County —who has tirelessly given of herself to support others like her — raising children can be a little easier.

The organization provides grandparents answers to frequently asked questions, as well as access to support groups and services. You can find more information at www.grandparentsraisinggrandchildren.org.

Brevard Family Partnership thanks all dedicated grandparents who have welcomed their grandchildren into their home; your love and commitment means they have a better chance to grow up healthy and safe, with a future full of possibilities.
